As a laser-minded novelist, I’m thinking in shades of grey about 2010 as it comes to a close. My drugged-up Beagle, who is suffering from both allergies and (I’m told only a few) fleas, is curled up, asleep on a chair beside me. I’m sitting at a generous friend’s table, on her verandah, looking out at Mount Ainslie through a lush of green—a bumper from the wettest summer in years (can’t see the flooding from here). Our old house is no longer ours, and our new house isn’t ours quite yet…so here we are: ending and beginning in the middle. The last few months have been an exercise in patience to say the least, and at the same time, I’ve enjoyed some of the most gorgeous experiences of my life. No matter what I write, no matter what I live, I certainly find we exist on this same plane…and I’ll never tire of exploring through my novels the ways in which we ride the line that joins it. Over the next few days, we’ll see friends and family, give and receive gifts, laugh, and possibly sob a little, too.
I wish you all a wonderful holiday season, and a happy new year… no matter what else you may be balancing! And pretty please, let me know what you’re reading over the holidays…I’m always looking out for something new.
XO,
Daniella
